Start with your name and contact details, then a concise professional profile where it adds value. Follow with employment history in reverse chronological order, education and relevant skills. Projects, certifications, volunteering and languages can be added when they strengthen the application.
What to leave off a UK CV
For most UK applications, you do not need to include age, date of birth, marital status, National Insurance number or a photograph. References can normally be supplied later rather than occupying valuable space.
Write for the vacancy, not for yourself
A CV is not a complete autobiography. Mirror the employer’s language where it truthfully describes your experience, bring the most relevant evidence forward, and cut detail that does not help this particular application. The result should make the recruiter’s decision easier, not prove how much you have done.
One page or two?
There is no universal rule. One page can suit graduates and people with shorter histories; two pages are common for experienced applicants. The real test is whether every section earns its space and the strongest evidence appears early.
Build it once. Test the presentation.
Open the FreeShelf Studio, add your details and compare multiple templates with the same content. Use the ATS tools when automated screening is likely, then print or save the version that fits the vacancy.
